300 tri mode friction welder

The MTI 300 Tri Mode Friction Welder is considered the most technically advanced Rotary Friction Welding system in the world and is currently the largest machine of its kind to also incorporate hybrid technology.

Machine Overview Machine Specs Machine Overview

MTI’s range of Tri-Mode friction welding machines is specifically designed to weld in Inertia, Direct Drive, or hybrid welding modes.

There are several benefits of the tri-mode welding process, the most obvious of which is the flexibility of machine cycle. You have all of the tools to customize a weld cycle without any of the limitations of a single style machine.

These machines can use flywheels to overcome peak torque limitations in Direct Drive Friction Welding (DDFW); they have the electric spindle drive motor to employ a constant velocity start to an Inertia weld or even length control and orientation in an Inertia weld (technical advances unique to MTI). You can also combine any variable pressures and/or variable speeds to customize a weld cycle specific to troublesome applications or material combinations.

The combination of an electric spindle drive motor and flywheels can overcome high torque applications in the DDFW cycle, or it allows us to undersized the spindle drive motor to save cost without sacrificing performance.

The converse is true as well; the spindle drive motor can be used to add or remove inertia to extend the range of the inertia cycle without having additional flywheels. The end result is a machine with the ultimate flexibility to construct weld cycles for difficult to weld material combinations, or to extend the capability of machine compared to the simple DDFW or IFW machine.

MTI is Nadcap-accredited, ISO 9001 certified, AS9100 Registered, ITAR compliant, and has been a trusted partner to aerospace companies for decades.

Additionally, MTI can design and build custom tooling for this machine to ensure your unique part fits perfectly.

Advanced specification features

Pressure Modulation:
MTI’s standard aerospace controls package includes the software for Pressure Modulation. Pressure Modulation is an advanced Upset control technique

Slide Table Programmable Positioning:
MTI’s standard design of machines uses the ram cylinder for the power stoke needed for welding while fixture/slide table positioning is handled by a separate slide cylinder capable closed loop slide positioning control

Weld Orientation:
MTI is the only manufacturer in the world capable of Weld Orientation of an Inertia Weld. MTI has dropped its patent application for Orientation in order to keep this ability as a trade secret.

Torque Modulation:
MTI is the only manufacturer in the world capable of Length Control of an Inertia Weld. MTI possesses a trade secret for Torque Modulation of a friction weld (direct drive or inertia). Torque Modulation is a technique used for upset control.

Dynamic Profile Modification:
MTI is the only manufacturer in the world capable of Length Control of an Inertia Weld, and this extension to Torque Modulation allows the user to target an Upset or Target a welded length.
